From the first drops of Zoflora to becoming home to some of Britain’s best known and much-loved household products and healthcare brands, Thornton & Ross is steeped in a history and heritage we’re truly proud of.
Thornton & Ross is one of the UK's fastest-growing, leading producers of household pharmaceutical products, and own some of the country's most loved brands such as Covonia®, Hedrin®, Cetraben®, as well as the leading disinfectant Zoflora®. Many people in the UK will have a product from Thornton & Ross somewhere at home.
From a base in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, Thornton & Ross develop, manufacture and supply a wide and growing range of branded over-the-counter medicines, dermatological preparations, niche generic medicines and other pharmaceutical, healthcare and hygiene products. Founded in 1922, Thornton & Ross has grown to become one of the largest over-the-counter pharmaceutical manufacturers in the UK. We continue to grow our business every year and are now selling a selection of our product range direct to consumers.
In 1937 Thornton and Ross moved to its current site in the village of Linthwaite in 1937 and over the next two decades Thornton and Ross were in war work producing medicines - and had government contracts for the manufacture of large quantities of disinfectant.
In the decades that followed we’ve grown rapidly and organically by developing new brands such as Care, now the No1 brand sold through UK pharmacy*, which launched in 1991, as well as acquiring existing family favourites such as Setlers, Radian B, Metanium, Allens, Acriflex, Flexitol, Savlon, Oilatum, and Tixylix.
In 2013 Thornton & Ross was acquired by German-based STADA AG and became a member of the STADA group.
After the company merged with Genus Pharmaceuticals we became the Centre of Excellence for the development of over-the-counter products within the STADA group. Worldwide, STADA Arzneimittel AG sells its products in approximately 120 countries.
We are also a trusted and reliable provider of prescription products, including emollients, bone health products and generics, to the NHS.
